Back to basics at CRF in Barcelona
Last week Changefirst were one of the sponsors of the annual Corporate Research Forum conference in Barcelona, which was attended by over 140 top HR executives from around Europe.
For me a highlight of the two-days was a presentation by Louise Csoka and Carl Ohlson on improving human performance. It reminded me of something – that seems so easy to forget – that the one of the key purposes we have is to improve people’s performance at work. However rather than talking about organisational processes they talked about how you work with someone one-on-one or in small groups to actually make a difference to the way they perform in a short space of time. They linked this to the need to worry less about why things are going wrong and more on what can be achieved from where you are. Great stuff. Interestingly seemed to split the audience between those people like me who saw it as a call to action in our organisations and those who saw it as over-simplistic, basic and somehow not relevant to their jobs or lives.

Taking care of people seems to be the starting point of human performance. Maybe it is over-simplistic, however it is frequently forgotten or bypassed. It then comes back “to haunt the organization”.

Sylvie – thank you for your comment. I agree with you. I wonder if that sense of care has gone from many organizations? I could make a case that feeling cared for, focus on improvement and positive reinforcement are a great recipe for increasing performance.
